Meet Mrs. Rega & her cvstechtime site #spedtech #spedchat #lifeskills

I would like to introduce a new member of my ever-growing PLN, Marissa Rega.  Marissa is a Technology Integration Teacher at a center-based school for students with special needs.   She teaches technology, life skills, as well as music.  She has taught in learning support and life skills classrooms for the past ten years and is now transitioning to the Technology Integration Teacher position.  Some of her favorite technologies to use in the classroom include SMART Board, iPods, and web 2.0 tools.  Marissa's site, cvstechtime, is currently under construction.  Her site features resources for teaching consumer and life skills (i.e., cooking), interactive/web 2.0 tools, and teacher tutorials.

Special Education Advisor's "50 Essential Special Education Twitter Feeds" #spedchat #slpchat

Special Education Advisor posted earlier today a list of the 50 Essential Special Education Twitter Feeds.

Congratulations to several members of my PLN who made the list: Nicole Eredics (@Insclusive_Class), Morgan Kolis (@Room5Friends), Tom Perran (@TPerran), Ira Socol (@IraSocol), and Chris Vacek (@ChrisVacek).

I am wondering just why am I NOT on this list.  Also there does not seem to be any speech or occupational therapists on this list.

Readers:  What special education tweeters do you think should on this list?  Please comment and share their Twitter names.

Support Blogging

I've talked previously about ways to increase your PLN (Personal Learning Network) through blogs, Twitter, & social bookmarking.

I'd like to add another resource to the list.  Support Blogging is a wiki of many blogs on education.  The site is sorted into different types of bloggers by topic, subject area, etc...  There are quite a few blogs listed in this resource, and since it's a wiki feel free to edit and add any you think might be missing!  It's a great way to find new blogs, and share information.

Personal Learning Network - NING

The last suggestion I have for creating a Personal Learning Network is a NING. NING's are like Facebook for a specific topic. They are a very powerful tool because they combine chat, blogs, discussion groups, and more. My school district implemented one for our professional development this year and it allows us to have one place to check for all our needs!

The one NING I follow is assistivetech. It has many different groups for Literacy & AAC, Rhett Girls AT, Web 2.0 as Instructional and Assistive Technologies, and more. It's a great group to meet others, to share ideas, and ask questions.

Take a look today!

Personal Learning Network - Twitter UPDATE

Since my first post (Personal Learning Network - Twitter), I've come across a few more great sites on how to use Twitter. The first is a great look at what Twitter is (a way to explain it to your friends):

Micro-blogging - Using Twitter
Advice for teachers new to Twitter
Top 5 Twitter Tips

If you decide to sign up for Twitter, make sure you head to the Twitter4teachers Wiki and add your name. This is a great place to look up others who are in your field and check them out to see if you'd like to follow them.

Personal Learning Network - Social Bookmarking

One of the most powerful additions to any PLN is social bookmarking. Social bookmarking is a web2.0 based service that allows you to access your bookmarks from any internet enabled computer, as well as your friends bookmarks. There are several sites that you could use for social bookmarking.

The first is Delicious.com. You can see my post about it here: Delicious. The site is easy to use, basically you save a site, and add tags to identify the content. The tags are searchable and it makes it really easy to find your links. You can see my links here, feel free to be my friend. You can even download a Firefox extension to make the process seamless. It installs as a button on your toolbar, you push it and the link is saved.

While I still maintain my Delicious account, I currently use Diigo.com as my social bookmarking tool of choice. Diigo is basically the same as Delicious, but includes several additional features. The best way to use Diigo is to download and install the Diigo Toolbar. Diigo allows you to bookmark the site and it will save it for you, unread, until you return to the site. As you save site you can send them to groups that you belong too. Personally I belong to Diigo in Education, EdTechTalk, & AT in SPED. Diigo will send you a daily e-mail with all the links submitted by your group members (you can change these settings). One of the other very powerful features allows you to highlight text on a saved page, and even add annotations to it. These annotations can be private or public. The collaboration available in this site make it a great resource for teachers and schools to use as a way to share information!

There are other social bookmarking sites - Stumbleupon & Mag.Nolia. I have not personally tried them, but they are popular. Please feel free to connect with me on Diigo or Delicious, and happy bookmarking!

Personal Learning Network - Blogs

Another great way to add to your PLN is to browse the blogosphere. I would hope that you have already started this process, because you are reading Teaching All Students. So I'm not here to tell you something you already know, but share some blogs I find useful. Since part of the fun of reading a blog is finding other blogs that you might like:

Special Education/Assistive Technology:

Teaching Learners with Multiple Special Needs

All Together We can
A.T.TipsCast
OneSwitch UK
Yuichi's Games
Speech Language Pathology Sharing
AT Mac
Ed Tech Solutions
SMD Teacher

Education:

It's Not All Flowers & Sausages
Scheiss Weekly
Larry Ferlazzo's Website of the Day

Ed Tech

Free Technology for Teachers
Free Resources from the Net for (Special) Education
Teach 42
The Edublogger
Talking SMARTboards & Much More
iLearn Technology

And here's a great post that list several other Edublogs for you to check out:

Making Teachers Nerdy

Lastly I recommend you look into a RSS reader to help you organize all the great blogs that you will be subscribing to. Take a look at this post to see how.

Personal Learning Network - Twitter

For those of you who have followed this blog for a while you know I've often promoted social networking, social bookmarking, and other such sites. Over the past year I've been slowly increasing my Personal Learning Network (PLN) to include more and more of those sites. PLN"s are one of those new eduspeak type terms that describes a network of people you rely on to help you keep learning. In years past those people might be your colleagues at your school, district, or people you might have met at conferences.

With the advent of the internet the creation of PLN's is becoming a bigger and more interesting task. We have many different sites to choose from to start creating a PLN. One of the most useful, and difficult to understand is Twitter. Twitter allows you to post short messages (140 characters or less) to your followers. At the same time you can "follow" others to see what they post. There are many educators currently on Twitter who share many different sites & thoughts on a regular basis. If you are looking to start your own PLN, here are a few educators worth following.

Patrick Black
Dean Shareski
Steve Dembo
Sue Waters
Kevin Jarret
Kathy Schrock
Paul Hamilton
Bud Hunt
Richard Byrne
Angela Maiers

Just by following these few educators you will start seeing interesting new uses for current curriculum and interesting sites that might help you do something new! I would recommend using a Twitter client (as opposed to following on Twitter.com) like Tweetdeck or Twhirl. Both are excellent clients to follow Tweets. You can also find clients for iPhones, Blackberries, & other phones.

If you are interested in other ways to use twitter check out these posts:

50 Ideas on Using Twitter

So you want to try Twitter
Twitter in the Classroom

I'm going to try and add some more information about PLN's in the next few days. We'll see if I'm able to do that (going to be a busy week).

#30D2BBB - Day 3 - Thank You

Today's challenge is to create a Thank You. As a fairly new blogger I have many people to thank! I decided to start blogging because I felt that many of my colleagues could use the information that I have found on other blogs & list servs.

Several of the people who helped me decide to get into blogging are listed below:

Kate Ahern - Teaching Learners with Multiple Special Needs

Samuel Sennott - All Together

The information and ideas that Kate & Samuel have given on their blog is a big reason I started blogging.

Internet Groups

I currently belong to 2 internet groups that are extremely useful for professionals, and parents alike.  One is for the software Boardmaker and the other is QIAT.

Boardmaker is a group of parents and professionals that share ideas, information, and files with each other.  The group receives between 15-25 e-mails per day on many different ways to use Boardmaker, and how to do things.  Questions are encouraged and files are available to download and are encouraged to be shared with the group.  To sign up head to Yahoo! Groups, then search for Boardmaker.  You may need to sign up for a Yahoo! ID.

The other group is called QIAT - Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology.  This is a group of professionals that share information about assistive technology.  Again, you will receive between 15 and 25 e-mails per day.  Topics from new blogs, new literacy programs, how to teach concepts, discussion of devices, and questions are fair game.  The group was started by Joy Zabala.  You can sign up for the list here, QIAT.
