The Inspirational Teacher Series

On Twitter recently I saw a post for The Inspirational Teacher Series from @SpecialedAdvice.  I thought it looked like a good series, and after reading the post from Morgan Kolis (@room5friends) I knew I wanted to participate.  So, here's are my answers to the questions!

Omnidazzle

Heard about a really interesting tool from @smeech on Twitter.  He posted a great screencast (from @kolsen4) about Omnidazzle.  Omnidazzle is a free plugin for Macs that allows you to highlight and change a screen temporarily on a smartboard or projector.  Check out the Screencast here.

Some of cool tools in this product are:
Sonar - turn your screen into a sonar monitor
Waves - create ripples on your screen
Comic - click around and comic book pow & kapow's appear

Some of the useful tools are:

Cutout - it dims the screen, then you can select parts to highlight.  You can choose from circle, oval or rectangle cutouts

Flashlight - it dims most of the screen, except for the immediate are around your mouse cursor.  You can adjust how big or small the flashlight is in settings

This tool could be extremely useful when doing a lesson with a projector or SMARTBoard to help students focus on the correct part of the screen.  Download Ominidazzle for Mac from here.

#spedtech = NEW hashtag about special ed. & technology #edchat #edtech #spedchat #assistivetech

For those of you who use Twitter, I want to share a new hashtag created by Samantha Fecich (@SFecich).  Samantha is a former special education teacher who is now a PhD student at Penn State University.  The new hashtag is #spedtech.  The purpose for this hashtag is to facilitate discussion about the use of various technologies in special education.  At first I was curious as to the need for another hashtag in addition to #assistivetech.  However, Samantha explained to me, "There is a huge field out there all about technology and special education adaptations need to be talked about. Not just AT."  I am interested to see what discussions are elicited and what technologies are shared using the #spedtech hashtag.

#EDYELP

I've just started listening to Rodd Lucier, The Clever Sheep, and his Teacher 2.0 podcast and have really come to like his style, and quick ideas for utilizing web2.0 and 21st century skills in the classroom. Yesterday, I came across his idea for #EDYELP, and it was great! Basically Twitter tracks topics and they get added to a trending topics list. Right now, even though educators are using Twitter like crazy, it never makes the list. So Rodd thought it would be a good idea to get on the Trending Topics list.

Here's the idea, with every Tweet you make today, include the hash tag #EDYELP. That way you can see who is following, what they are talking about and we can get our word out there! Check out his post on the subject - Yelp! (I love his reference to Horton!). Let's make our voices heard today!

Personal Learning Network - Twitter UPDATE

Since my first post (Personal Learning Network - Twitter), I've come across a few more great sites on how to use Twitter. The first is a great look at what Twitter is (a way to explain it to your friends):

Micro-blogging - Using Twitter
Advice for teachers new to Twitter
Top 5 Twitter Tips

If you decide to sign up for Twitter, make sure you head to the Twitter4teachers Wiki and add your name. This is a great place to look up others who are in your field and check them out to see if you'd like to follow them.

Personal Learning Network - Twitter

For those of you who have followed this blog for a while you know I've often promoted social networking, social bookmarking, and other such sites. Over the past year I've been slowly increasing my Personal Learning Network (PLN) to include more and more of those sites. PLN"s are one of those new eduspeak type terms that describes a network of people you rely on to help you keep learning. In years past those people might be your colleagues at your school, district, or people you might have met at conferences.

With the advent of the internet the creation of PLN's is becoming a bigger and more interesting task. We have many different sites to choose from to start creating a PLN. One of the most useful, and difficult to understand is Twitter. Twitter allows you to post short messages (140 characters or less) to your followers. At the same time you can "follow" others to see what they post. There are many educators currently on Twitter who share many different sites & thoughts on a regular basis. If you are looking to start your own PLN, here are a few educators worth following.

Patrick Black
Dean Shareski
Steve Dembo
Sue Waters
Kevin Jarret
Kathy Schrock
Paul Hamilton
Bud Hunt
Richard Byrne
Angela Maiers

Just by following these few educators you will start seeing interesting new uses for current curriculum and interesting sites that might help you do something new! I would recommend using a Twitter client (as opposed to following on Twitter.com) like Tweetdeck or Twhirl. Both are excellent clients to follow Tweets. You can also find clients for iPhones, Blackberries, & other phones.

If you are interested in other ways to use twitter check out these posts:

So you want to try Twitter
Twitter in the Classroom

I'm going to try and add some more information about PLN's in the next few days. We'll see if I'm able to do that (going to be a busy week).
