#AppMondayTAS - iReward 3.0 by Grembe Apps @grembe #edapp #IEAR #spedchat #slpchat

For the second part of this week's #AppMondayTAS, I would like to share an updated version of iReward (iTunes App Store | Universal | $4.99) by Grembe Apps. iReward is a digital token board or motivational tool.  With iReward, teachers/parents/therapists are easily able to create token boards to help reinforce positive behaviors using visual (or tangible) rewards.  This app replaces the traditional velcro token-boards, which required a lot of effort to make.  iReward helps students remain on-task.  This app also helps facilitate transitions between activities.

I actually have been using this app in my classroom and with clients in my work as a Family Trainer since it was first released in late 2009.  Since then I have communicated with Jeff and Lisa (the developers), who are very open to feedback from users.  This update of iReward is exciting for me, as it adds several features  that I had requested!

iReward is a MUST have app for any classroom or home that has children with special needs (particularly autism).

App Features:

• Support for multiple users - save custom token boards for multiple students on one device
• Organize rewards or token boards by name or group
• Copy/paste rewards between different names
• Customization
• choice of background colors for names
• choice of tokens (checks, coins, gold and red stars, or smiley faces)
• Include visual of reward
• Take photo of reward using built-in camera, import a from device photo albums, or use built-in Google Image search
• Ability to use two pictures to reinforce a first-then reward
• Record custom audio and/or play video of keyboard when reward completed
• Add or remove tokens
• Option for only adding/removing one token at a time
• Optional sound for when a token is added
• Options for larger images and text, and for playing sound when adding a token
• Ability to "lock" the app, preventing student from making any changes. Unlock the app by shaking device and entering the password.
• In-app help added to first screen
• Remarkable customer service (support@grembe.com) and user forum

Suggestions for Improvement:

• Ability to create custom tokens
• Ability to select other video rewards (either videos on device or YouTube)
• Optional built-in timer for interval reinforcement schedules
• Data collection - keep track of how many times each session/day a student selected/earned a particular reward
• Ability to share token boards with other devices either by "bumping" devices or through iTunes

5 levels of difficulty:

Level 1 – set the time to the hour

Level 2 – set the time to the 1/2-hour

Each level is completed setting the clock correctly 12 times.

The Writing Machine (iTunes App Store | iPad | $0.99) is another app by Hump Software to help teach students letters, words. and vocabulary.  This app focuses on helping students increase their vocabulary by presenting words paired with pictures of common or familiar objects.

This simple cause and effect app lets users select a letter, see a picture that begins with the selected letter, and watch as the word is printed below the picture.  You can tap the letter in the top right to hear it's sound & tap the picture to hear the word.  It helps to reinforce the concept of one picture one word & left to right orientation of writing/reading.  134 different picture/word combinations are included with this app.

Preschool Matching (iTunes App Store | Universal | $1.99) is another great app from Kid Spring Studio.  This app focuses on teaching matching of letters, shapes, and numbers.

This app is very similar to their Alphabet & Number Sequencing app, but focuses on teaching the skill of matching.  You can pick upper to lower case matching, shape matching, number to number of object matching, shape to silhouette matching, and random matching activities.  It includes parental settings like the ability to include a name on the sticker reward charts, and options to save charts.  It has audio & visual reinforcements for correct answers, as well as gentle redirections when incorrect.  A fun way to teach matching skills!

Boogie Bopper (iTunes App Store | Universal | $1.99) and Sound Shaker (iTunes App Store | Universal | $1.99) from Tickle Tap Apps are both great cause and effect apps for iOS devices.  These are simple apps, but have some great features that will keep younger students engaged.

Boogie Bopper
Boogie Bopper is a simple app that has 2 modes.  The first is a xylophone/piano type mode where children can follow dots to play simple melodies.  You can even pick the melodies you want to play.  The 2nd mode is a more free form mode.  You can touch the dots to play, but you can also move them around the canvas and put them in any order you'd like.

Sound Shaker
Sound Shaker has a similar interface, but lots of things to explore.  You start by selecting a sound you'd like to use.  Then you just tap on the screen to add it to the canvas.  As you add more they hit each other and make more noise.  Even better, if you hold the screen for a length of time you get different sounds to appear that you can interact with!  It's a great app to have fun with.
