@lasenders Pinterest for AT

I have not used Pinterest myself very much, but I know that may people find it to be a great way to find curate content.  I don't have a problem with Pinterest, but have found my current methods for getting content to be enough, and I don't need another thing!  But, I have found some very interesting project and information on Pinterest and I thought I'd share with you.

Lauren S. Enders (@lasenders) is a Speech Pathologist & Assistive Technology Consultant from Pennsylvania and a frequent contributor on the iTeach Special Education Facebook Group.  Lauren has shared her Pinterest board collection on numerous occasions, and it is a wealth of information.  Lauren has boards centering around iPad/iPod touch cases, styluses, and apps.  Some of the app list include apps for apraxia, free language apps, and teaching verbs.  There are also curated lists of AAC lessons and ideas.  Lauren has collected an amazing amount of information.  Make sure to check it out!

#AppMondayTAS - Sharing Timer

Each week I will be featuring an app from BridgingApps.org.  These apps are features in the Bridging Apps newsletter each week and are reviewed by Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Special Education Teachers.  Come back each week for a new review.  If you’d like more information on how to use the BridgingApps.org website, or to find more app reviews, please click here.

SharingTimer (Universal, $0.99)
Reviewer Comments
Sharing Timer is a great way to introduce sharing, taking turns with peers and managing play time. The caregiver can use the set up screen to set up the activities, the timers, sounds, etc. Also, the app is easy enough for a 5-6 year old to set up independently, with the exception of writing the child's name.
First you identify the players and the color they want to be. If you have their picture you can insert it or take one with the iPad's camera. Next you input the activity you want to play, such as "play ball" or "play house". If you want to add a game press the Activity button and edit the caption to the activity you want. It is helpful to be able to customize the games for the classroom, playdates, or guided play in group therapy sessions. You can also adjust the time for each turn depending upon what you are playing and the age of the children. You can input just a few seconds for younger children and several minutes depending on the developmental age.
Finally, you can customize the background of the app. The chalkboard set up is nice as it is very settling for all children to look at. The last choice is the sound that alerts you when your time is up. Our students liked the Trolley Bell as it does not scare the class when it goes off. The timer has made a big difference in our class as the kids can see their name and see the time counter so they can watch for themselves when it their turn.
Possible IEP Goal: The student will actively participate in class group activities (e.g., sharing, working on group projects).

Rate That App

Make sure you check out this great article on the ASHASphere - Rate that App.  Not only does Deborah Tomarakos provide links to all sorts of apps she has tried out and how she has found them.  She shares the rubric she uses to rate apps.   She included 2 rubrics - one for Speech/Language apps and one for other educational apps.  These tools are crucial to evaluating the 1000's of apps available for use with iOS and Android devices.  Definitely worth a read!

#AppMondayTAS - Toca Boca Apps

I downloaded Toca Hair Salon (Universal | $1.99) on a free day, and until recently had not had the chance to check it out.  This app is an amazingly well done app that's all about cutting and styling hair.  I first tried with my daughter, who fell in love with it.  Then I tried it with my students (8 boys) and they can't stop playing with it.  This app is all about play and imagination and presents so many opportunities for communication and socialization it is well worth the money.

Even before I had Toca Hair Salon, I had downloaded Toca Tea Party (iPad Only | $2.99), and again hadn't had a chance to try it out until recently.  This app caught my attention immediately, it's beautifully created and an amazing recreation of a child's tea party.  You start off by setting a table, by choosing your tablecloth, plates, cups and sweet treats.  Then it tells you to get some friends!!!  Everyone sits around the iPad and they can eat their sweet treats and drink their tea.  The host can pass out more treats and pour more tea.  There's even some napkins for when you spill.  The opportunities for practicing social skills, questioning, answering, and requesting are endless.  You can't even take more to eat until you finish what's in front of you!  When all the treats are done you have to put everything in the sink and clean up!

Since I had tried these two apps, I decided to splurge and get a few more.  I've since downloaded Toca Kitchen (Universal | $1.99) and Toca Store (Universal | $1.99).  Both are excellent apps that really encourage communication, creative play, socialization, requesting and more.  Toca Kitchen lets you pick from four characters and feed them.  Some foods they like, some they don't and some need to be cooked first!  Toca Store lets the kids set up shop and play store keeper.

Recently Toca Boca has added Toca House to their list of apps, which also include Toca Doctor, Toca Birthday Party Playtime, Toca Robot Lab, Toca Hair Salon - Christmas Gift (Free) and Helicopter Taxi.  I highly recommend these apps for any special education classroom or parent!

#AppMondayTAS - LetterSchool

I read about LetterSchool on OT's with Apps.  A great blog about Occupational Therapy and using mobile devices.  I was impressed with the review so I decided to download the lite version.  It didn't take me long to realize that I needed the full version!

LetterSchool has quite a few options for practicing basic letter and number formation.  It includes both upper and lower case letters in Zaner-Blosser, Handwriting Without Tears, and D'Nealian style.  You can set up to 3 user accounts in the app.  Each letter or number has 3 levels to complete.  Level 1 you have to touch where you start the letter and it will finish the line.  Level 2, you have to draw the full line before you can go on.  Level 3 starts with prompts, but then removes them as you write (it will bring them back if you need help).

The animations after each level are quite engaging and it mixes them up with every letter.  The app is $2.99 and well worth the money.  If you have any students working on letter formation this is a great app to try and have some fun!

Sped Apps

Caroline Musselwhite (www.aacintervention.com), and quite a few other speech therapist have started a great wiki - Sped Apps 2.  The purpose of the wiki is listed right on the front page:

The founding members of this wiki consist of "old" therapists, with over 200 years of experience working with special populations and technology. We hope that people will use this site to make informed decisions before downloading. Our purpose in creating this wiki is to foster collaboration around how applications can be used in unique ways to support learning in home, school, and therapy settings. If you have used iPad/iPod applications with special populations, please consider joining and contributing to this wiki by adding information to the charts on the various pages (see navigation pane on the left). You can also contribute without joining by adding entries on the discussion tabs for each page.

I think the last sentence is the best part - Join and add entries!  If you click on the discussion link on the top

You can see and contribute ideas on how to use the apps.  These reviews are geared toward students with disabilities in mind and they have quite a few reviews done.  I can see them adding a lot more in the coming months!

Google Trick - Searching for Apps only

If you've ever searched for an app on Google, there can be some difficulty if you don't have the right name and such.  While listening to the latest episode of TWIG they mentioned that you can limit your searches in Google to just applications!  Head to Google and type in your search term, then look on the left hand menu and click more (see screenshot below).

After clicking more, you should see an link for "applications", click it and Google with search all the major App Stores for the app (iTunes, Android, CNET, etc...).  You can see an example below:

Happy Searching!

No Limits to Learning - AAC apps

Lon Thornburg (@lontee) from No Limits 2 Learning just posted a 2 part series about AAC apps for mobile platforms.  Take a look at his thoughts on these apps.

Apps for AAC Part One

Apps for AAC Part Two

Lon will be presenting a 3 hour break out session on these apps in Portland, Oregon at the AT Now! Conference March 1 and 2. (The breakout session day is March 2). If you are in the area and might be interested in attending, there are 2 other presenters doing sessions on iPads that day so there will be a lot covered. For more information go to the Oregon Technology Access Program website and check the conference page. They don't have the actual conference info up yet, but it should be up in January sometime to register.

AAC Apps Information

With the proliferation of iOS devices and communication apps, I thought it would a good time to share some resources for researching the best AAC apps.

Jane Farrall of the Spectronics Blog has an amazingly complete list of all the AAC apps available for iOS.  She has lots of information about what the app includes, what features it has, switch compatibility, along with her rating.  This is one of my first stops when checking out any AAC app.

iPhone/iPad Apps for AAC

If for some reason Jane does not have an app, or if you are looking at an Android or web app, I would suggest checking this great AAC Checklist from Scott Marfilius & Kelly Fonner.  The AAC Checklist is a wonderful tool to evaluate apps and see if they would fit your need.  It also includes a very extensive list of AAC apps and what platforms they run on (iOS, Android, Web, etc...)

RJ Cooper Apps - Spell-A-Word & Point to Pictures

RJ Cooper & Associates have a ton of great accessibility devices for all learners.  RJ was the first to develop a Bluetooth Switch interface to use with the iPad and has a great app for learning to unlock iOS devices-Slide to Unlock.  Recently he announced 2 new apps.  Take a look at the press release below

I am happy to *finally* announce the availability of my latest 2 apps that have been 'ported' over to iPad! I had promised these by end of summer, but programming for the iPad is just not that easy. And I try to make my apps very 'rich' in features.
Spell-A-Word - LARGE print, spelling app, where you can make your own WordLists, or use those that we've made for you (complete with pictures and recorded words). When searching for this app, make sure you use the dashes.  To view in iTunes click below:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spell-a-word/id480176452?ls=1&mt=8
Point To Pictures - The only AAC *training* app in the world. I believe this app is a *necessary* prerequisite for successful AAC on the iPad for anyone that doesn't immediately 'get' an actual AAC app!  To view in iTunes click below.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/point-to-pictures/id479371604?ls=1&mt=8
My apps are free for the first 2 weeks of release so go get 'em! After that they will be $29.95 each (each cost me over $10K to create!)
Soon to follow are switch versions, Scan-A-Word, and Scan to Pictures.
This email is a little old, so you probably have about a week left to download these apps for free!  They both look like very interesting apps for helping learners with communication difficulties become more proficient!

The trouble with lists by @SENICT #IEAR #edapp #assistivetech #spedtech

The trouble with lists... is a MUST read blog post by Ian Bean about the problems with all those apps lists that many of us are putting together and sharing. I appreciate his mentioning the Teaching All Students blog and my posts as one of his favorite resources. I would really encourage everyone involved in this app phenomenon to contribute to his project!

#AppMondayTAS - iReward 3.0 by Grembe Apps @grembe #edapp #IEAR #spedchat #slpchat

For the second part of this week's #AppMondayTAS, I would like to share an updated version of iReward (iTunes App Store | Universal | $4.99) by Grembe Apps. iReward is a digital token board or motivational tool.  With iReward, teachers/parents/therapists are easily able to create token boards to help reinforce positive behaviors using visual (or tangible) rewards.  This app replaces the traditional velcro token-boards, which required a lot of effort to make.  iReward helps students remain on-task.  This app also helps facilitate transitions between activities.

I actually have been using this app in my classroom and with clients in my work as a Family Trainer since it was first released in late 2009.  Since then I have communicated with Jeff and Lisa (the developers), who are very open to feedback from users.  This update of iReward is exciting for me, as it adds several features  that I had requested!

iReward is a MUST have app for any classroom or home that has children with special needs (particularly autism).

Video Demo (by developer - our video demo will be uploaded tonight!):

App Features:
  • Support for multiple users - save custom token boards for multiple students on one device
  • Organize rewards or token boards by name or group
    • Copy/paste rewards between different names
  • Customization
    • choice of background colors for names
    • choice of tokens (checks, coins, gold and red stars, or smiley faces)
  • Include visual of reward
    • Take photo of reward using built-in camera, import a from device photo albums, or use built-in Google Image search
    • Ability to use two pictures to reinforce a first-then reward
  • Record custom audio and/or play video of keyboard when reward completed
  • Add or remove tokens
    • Option for only adding/removing one token at a time
    • Optional sound for when a token is added
  • Options for larger images and text, and for playing sound when adding a token
  • Ability to "lock" the app, preventing student from making any changes. Unlock the app by shaking device and entering the password.
  • In-app help added to first screen
  • Remarkable customer service (support@grembe.com) and user forum

Suggestions for Improvement:
  • Ability to create custom tokens
  • Ability to select other video rewards (either videos on device or YouTube)
  • Optional built-in timer for interval reinforcement schedules
  • Data collection - keep track of how many times each session/day a student selected/earned a particular reward
  • Ability to share token boards with other devices either by "bumping" devices or through iTunes

GIVEAWAY\OFFER

The developer have provided us with 3 promo codes for iReward to giveaway to active readers of the Teaching All Students blog. You can enter to win a promo code for iReward by doing the following:

1. Comment below and describe\share what kind of token economy or visual supports you have used to motivate your child or students.

#AppMondayTAS - i Get It apps @iGetItapps - visual supports & social stories #promocodes #edapp #autism #spedchat

NEW!!  This #AppMondayTAS review includes a new feature - video demos recorded by Jeremy.  We are hoping to do more video reviews for future #AppMonday reviews.  Developers, please contact Jeremy if you would like to request a video review of your app(s).

For the first part of this week's #AppMondayTAS, I would like to spotlight a relatively new developer - i Get It! apps (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99/each).  Be sure to check out their newly designed website - which I think they did a really nice job with, "like" them on Facebook, and "follow" them on Twitter.  Currently, i Get it! offers two series of educational apps, the Identification Series and i-Seequence Series.  These apps are designed to facilitate cognitive growth through building language skills.  The i Get It! apps are appropriate for typically developing children as well as children with special needs such as language impairments, autism, ADHD, and auditory processing disorders.

Identification Series

The Identification Series apps support students in learning and communicating important and relevant personal information.  There are many uses for these apps, including receptive identification, expressive labeling, and answering WH-questions.  There are currently 5 apps in this series.

  1. All About Me  (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99) - visual, auditory, and text support for helping a student learn or communicate personal information
  2. I Get...My Family  (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99) - visual, auditory, and text support to help a student learn or communicate about members in his/her family
  3. I Get...People at School  (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99) - visual, auditory, and text support to help a student learn or communicate about people at his/her school including teachers and staff
  4. I Get...My Classmates  (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99) - visual, auditory, and text support to help a student learn or communicate about their peers
  5. I Get...People in My Community  (iTunes App Store | Universal | $0.99) - visual, auditory, and text support to help a student learn or communicate about community helpers
Video Demo:  All About Me

App Features:
  • Simple, child-friendly interface
  • Easy, straightforward editing interface
  • Customize each icon
    • Import your own photographs (either using built-in camera or from the device's photo albums)
    • Record audio
    • Edit the text statements, which appear under the photo
  • Custom fields (in all apps except All About Me)
  • Turn on/off, or show/hide icons
  • Re-arrange the order in which the icons appear
  • Task completion feature - Completion of each field can be indicated by the use of a checkmark feature.
  • Website provides ideas for how these apps could be used

Suggestions for Improvement:

  • Fix the glitch in All About Me with the personalized photo not showing up and audio recording not working correctly for the Pets icon.
  • Do not include fields on screen when left blank.  For example, if a year is not provided under the Birthday section in the All About Me app, that field should not be shown on the final screen.
  • Ability to edit the text of all icon titles
  • Ability to add custom fields to the All About Me app (i.e. allergies or important medical information).
  • Ability to add multiple favorites in the All About Me app with custom buttons like with Pets.
  • Additional customizable icons in the I Get...People at School and I Get...People in My Community apps
  • Add a button with audio recording on each page/screen that would facilitate the student asking that question back to his/her communication partner.
  • Multi-user interface, or classroom/family edition - ability to save customizations for multiple students within the app on a single device
